83, 85, 87 Marchmont Road, Edinburgh

This building, located at 83, 85, and 87 Marchmont Road in Edinburgh, was likely designed by R Roberts in 1883. It is a four-storey, four-bay tenement that is part of a terrace styled after Scottish architecture from the 17th century. The exterior is constructed of squared and snecked sandstone, featuring contrasting polished ashlar dressings. Notable architectural elements include a base course, a cornice above the ground floor, roll-moulded door surrounds, panelled doors, and plate glass fanlights. The windows on the third floor are corbelled, and the reveals are chamfered.

The west elevation, which serves as the entrance, is nearly symmetrical. It has three doorways and a single window in the central bays at the ground floor. Full-height canted windows are present at the outer left and right, with dividing cornices. The outer left bay is corbelled to a square at the gablehead, which features an arrow slit. The outer right bay has a hexagonal pyramidal roof. The central bays contain bipartite windows, and the second-floor windows have decorative lintels. The advanced third-floor windows break the eaves and are topped with semi-circular pedimented dormerheads. Above the first floor, there is a central framed datestone marked "1883."

The building has plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and a central corniced stack with shoulders at the wallhead. It also features corniced mutual stacks, moulded octagonal cans, and scrolled skewputts.

The interiors were not seen in 1990. There is a low saddleback wall along the street.
