Description

112, 114, and 116 Marchmont Road in Edinburgh is a four-storey, five-bay tenement built in 1886 by William Hogg, designed in the Scottish 17th century style. The building features squared and snecked sandstone with contrasting polished ashlar dressings. It has a base course and a corbel table at the third floor, which steps down to form segmental-arched hoods between the bays at the second floor. The façade includes chamfered reveals, deep-set panelled doors, plate glass fanlights, and relieving arches above the doorways.

On the entrance elevation, the central doorway is located in the third bay at ground level, with single windows above. The fourth bay features a roll-moulded doorway flanked by a single window, with more single windows above. The third and fourth bays are connected at the eaves by a crowstepped gable, which has a slit window set in the gablehead. The second bay also has a roll-moulded doorway, flanked to the right by a single window, with additional single windows above. A finialled semi-circular dormerhead is present above the third-floor window. There is an altered shopfront at ground level in the advanced bay to the outer right, complete with a cornice above and a finial. The outer left bay features a full-height canted window, corbelled to a square at the crowstepped gable, which also has an arrow slit in the gablehead. The building has plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, a corniced gablehead stack, coped and rendered mutual stacks, and a crowstepped gable adjoining the tenement to the north. The interiors were not seen in 1991. A low boundary wall runs along the street.
