Description

This building, located at 104, 106, 108, and 110 Marchmont Road and 1, 3, and 5 Spottiswoode Road in Edinburgh, is a four-storey tenement designed by William Hogg in 1886. It features a Baronian style with shops on the ground floor. The exterior is made of squared and snecked sandstone, accented with polished ashlar dressings. Notable architectural details include a cornice above the shops, a string course at the first floor, and a corbel table above the second floor that steps down to form a segmental-arched hood. The gables are crowstepped with chamfered reveals, and there are pedimented dormerheads.

On the Marchmont Road elevation, there are four bays, including a corner bay. The shopfronts have been altered, featuring dividing panelled and capitalled piers. A canted window spans the angle, topped with a facetted pyramidal roof and a lead finial. The first bay has bipartite windows, while the remaining bays have single windows, with semi-circular pediments above the third-floor windows. An adjoining tenement is located to the outer left.

The Spottiswoode Road elevation has three bays, excluding the angle bay. The ground floor shopfronts have also been altered, similar to the Marchmont Road side. The third bay features a 2-light canted window with a facetted pyramidal roof and lead finial. The first bay has bipartite windows, and the second bay has single windows. Adjoining tenements that are not listed are recessed to the outer left. The building has plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and coped wallhead and gablehead stacks. The interiors were not seen in 1991.
