Description
68, 70, 72 Marchmont Crescent is a four-storey, four-bay tenement built in the Baronial style in 1883 by R Roberts. It is part of a curved terrace and constructed from squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. The building features a base course, a dividing band course above the ground floor, a string course above the first floor, a cornice above the second floor, and chamfered reveals.
On the west entrance elevation, there are two doorways on the inner right, a doorway and a single window on the inner left, all with panelled doors and plate glass fanlights. The outer left and right bays have full-height canted windows that are corbelled to square at the gablehead, with blank rectangular panels above. The gable on the outer left is crowstepped and topped with a stone finial, while the gable on the outer right is coped and also features a stone finial. The inner bays have bipartite windows, and the fourth-floor windows break the eaves in finialled pedimented dormerheads, with the inner right being crowstepped. There is a central square blank tablet between the first and second floors, with smaller tablets at the same level next to the canted windows.
The building has plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and a rendered and coped mutual stack with moulded octagonal cans and beak skewputts. The street is bordered by a low saddleback wall. The interiors were not seen in 1990.
