Description

50, 52, and 54 Marchmont Crescent in Edinburgh is a four-storey, five-bay tenement built in 1881 by R Roberts, designed in a Baronial style as part of a curved terrace. The building is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone, featuring polished ashlar dressings. It has a base course, a dividing band course above the ground floor, and dividing string courses above the first and second floors, with chamfered reveals.

On the west entrance elevation, there is a doorway and a single window to the inner right, a doorway and a bipartite window to the inner left, and a central doorway with panelled doors and plate glass fanlights. The outer left and right bays feature full-height canted windows that are corbelled to square crowstepped gableheads with stone finials, and there are blank rectangular panels in the gableheads. The central advanced three-storey bay is corbelled at the first floor and has tripartite windows on all floors. The fourth-floor window breaks the eaves in a stone finialled gable with a circular floral patera. The remaining bays have single windows, with fourth-floor windows breaking the eaves in a pedimented dormer to the inner right and a shouldered wallhead stack to the inner left.

The building has plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, a coped and rendered mutual stack, a corniced mutual stack to the north, moulded octagonal cans, moulded eaves guttering, some original rainwater goods, and beak skewputts.

The interiors were not seen in 1990, and there is a low saddleback wall to the street.
