Description

105, 107, and 109 Marchmont Road in Edinburgh is a four-storey, five-bay tenement building designed by John C Hay in 1882. It is part of a terrace that reflects the Scottish 17th century style. The structure is built from squared and snecked sandstone, featuring contrasting polished ashlar dressings. Notable architectural elements include a base course, a cornice above the second floor, long and short work around the window margins, chamfered reveals, panelled doors, and plate glass fanlights.

The west entrance elevation has three doorways at the ground floor, separated by single windows. The central doorway is round-arched with a decorative shell motif, while the other doorways are roll-moulded and feature hoodmoulds. Full-height canted windows are located at the outer left and right, corbelled to a square at the gableheads, which are adorned with inset paterae; the left gable has a crowstepped design, and the right gable is finialled. There are dividing bands and aprons to the windows, except at the third floor. The central bay has bipartite windows, with a decorative bracketed double cill on the second floor window, and the third floor window breaks the eaves in a shaped Dutch-style gable. The remaining bays have single windows, with third-floor windows that break the eaves, featuring round-arched and finialled pediments.

The building is fitted with plate glass sash and case windows and has a grey slate roof, corniced wallhead, and mutual stacks. The roof is detailed with moulded octagonal cans and beak skewputts.
