Description

3 and 4 Beaufort Road in Edinburgh is a four-storey, five-bay tenement built in 1880 by John C Hay, designed in the Scottish 17th century style. The building features squared and snecked red and pink sandstone with contrasting polished ashlar dressings. Notable architectural details include a cornice above the shops, a string course above the first floor, a corbel table at the third floor, crowstepped gables, contrasting long and short quoins, finialled pediments, and chamfered reveals.

On the south elevation, there are four shops at the ground floor, which have a mix of stone and cast-iron capitalled pilasters and columns in their shopfronts. A central doorway leads to the tenement, featuring a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight. Above the shops, full-height conted windows are located on the outer right and penultimate left, corbelled to a square at the gablehead with blank heraldic tablets inset. The outer left bay has bipartite windows, which break the eaves at the third floor in a pedimented dormerhead with a small patera inset. The remaining bays have single windows, with the third floor windows also breaking the eaves in pedimented dormerheads. A hoodmoulding is present over a square blank tablet.

The east elevation features a single window at the ground floor and two small single windows on each floor above. The building has 4-pane plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, corniced wallhead stacks, moulded octagonal cans, and scrolled skewputts. The interiors were not seen in 1990.
