Description
23, 25, 27, and 29 Marchmont Crescent in Edinburgh is a four-storey Baronial corner tenement, likely designed by John C Hay in 1880. The building features an angle turret and a shop at the ground floor, constructed from squared and snecked cream sandstone with contrasting polished ashlar dressings. Notable architectural details include a cornice above the shopfronts and another above the second floor, as well as a corbel table at the third floor that steps down to the second floor on the east side, forming a segmental-arched hood over the first floor window on the north side. The reveals are chamfered, and the third-floor windows break the eaves.
On the east elevation facing Marchmont Crescent, the shopfronts have been largely altered. Above the ground floor, there are three bays, excluding the angle bay. The outer left bay features tripartite windows on the first and second floors, while the third floor has bipartite windows with a crowstepped dormerhead that includes a blank rectangular panel. The second bay contains single windows, and the crowstepped dormerheads are linked to a wallhead stack. The third bay has bipartite windows and a pedimented dormerhead on the third floor, with a square blank panel on the outer right.
The north elevation facing Warrender Park Road also has largely altered shopfronts at ground level and consists of five bays, including the angle bay. The first bay features bipartite windows and a hoodmoulding over the first-floor window, with a circular section above the eaves and a cornice leading to a conical roof topped with an iron finial. The third and fifth bays have bipartite windows, while the second and fourth bays contain single windows. The third-floor windows have pedimented dormerheads with stone finials. The building has plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, two corniced wallhead stacks on the east side, corniced mutual stacks, and crowstepped mutual gables adjoining tenements to the south and west, along with bracketted skewputts.
The interiors were not seen in 1991.
