Description

35 and 37 Warrender Park Road is a four-storey tenement building dating from around 1880, featuring Baronial details and shops on the ground floor. It is constructed from squared and snecked cream sandstone with contrasting polished dressings. The building has a base course and a corbel table at the third floor, which steps down to form a segmental-arched hood over the first-floor window on the west elevation. The reveals are chamfered, and the third-floor windows break the eaves, set within pediments.

On the south elevation facing Warrender Park Road, the building has six bays, including an angle tower. The shopfronts at the ground floor are advanced, wrapping around the angle on the outer left. The three-stage circular-section angle tower features a fishscale conical roof, a semi-circular pedimented dormer, and an iron weathervane finial. The doorways in the third and fifth bays are roll-moulded, leading to panelled doors with plate glass fanlights above. There are single windows above these doorways, and a semi-circular pediment in the third bay. A full-height canted window is corbelled to a square at the gablet-crowstepped gablehead, which features a floral patera. The sixth bay has a full-height advanced tripartite window with a curvilinear gable. The second bay has single windows above the shopfront, also topped with a semi-circular pediment.

The west elevation facing Marchmont Road has two bays, with advanced shopfronts at the ground. Above, there is a full-height canted window, corbelled to a square at the crowstepped gablehead, which includes a blank heraldic shield. The remaining bay has single windows topped with a semi-circular pediment. The building features plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, gabled round-arched timber dormers on the south and west sides, and three and five flue corniced wallhead stacks on the west. The south side has a coped mutual gable and coped and rendered end gable stacks, along with scroll skewputts.

The interiors were not seen in 1991. There is a low boundary wall along Warrender Park Road.
