Description

The Royal Bank of Scotland, located at 29, 31, 33, and 35 Marchmont Road in Edinburgh, is a four-storey corner tenement built around 1880, showcasing Baronial architectural details. The building features squared and snecked sandstone with polished dressings. A broken string course runs above the first floor, while a cornice and corbel table are present at the third floor, stepping down to create segmental-arched hoods over two first-floor windows facing west and one facing north. The third-floor windows break the eaves within pedimented dormerheads, and the structure is topped with crowsteps that are either coped or gabletted.

On the north elevation facing Warrender Park Road, the building has five bays, including a rounded angle bay. The shopfront on the outer left features leaded upper glazing panels, while the corner bank has a modern front. The rounded angle includes bipartite windows for each bank, and there is a crowstepped dormerhead above. The remaining bays contain single windows.

The west elevation facing Marchmont Road consists of eight bays, excluding the rounded angle bay. The corner bank has a modern shopfront, accompanied by three additional shopfronts and a main door at ground level. The doorway in the eighth bay features a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight, with single windows above. The seventh bay also has single windows, while a facetted pyramidal roof covers the seventh and eighth bays. A full-height bipartite window is located in the sixth bay, along with a crowstepped dormerhead. Bipartite windows are present above the shops in the third and fifth bays, with single windows in the remaining bays. The building has plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and various corniced stacks, including a wallhead stack to the south return, two mutual stacks, and three coped and rendered mutual stacks, along with scroll skewputts.

A low boundary wall lines Marchmont Road.
