Description

Possibly Thomas P Marwick, dated 1878. 4-storey corner tenement with Scots Baronial details; shops at ground floor. Squared and snecked sandstone with polished dressings. Cornice above shops; corbel table at 3rd floor, stepped down to form panels to 2nd floor windows in 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th bays to N and 2nd and 3rd bays to W; string course at 3rd floor; crowstepped gables; chamfered reveals.

W (MARCHMONT ROAD) ELEVATION: 7-bay including angle bay and 2 recessed bays to outer right. Shopfronts at ground (stall riser removed and replaced with small-pane glazing to shop at outer left); panelled maindoor in 3rd bay from left; 4-pane fanlight; pierced balustrade above 2 shops to outer right. Advanced doorway in angle bay to outer left; corbels to pierced balustrade with flanking ball-finialled dies; 2-leaf panelled doors; advanced tripartite windows at 1st and 2nd floors; advanced bipartite window at 3rd floor; single window in stone-finialled gablehead; 2-stage bartizans flanking advanced windows at 2nd and 3rd floors; fishscale conical roofs. Bipartite windows in 5th and 7th bays; pedimented dormerheads. Single windows in remaining bays; semi-circular to 4th and 6th bays; 2nd and 3rd bays linked above eaves by gable; date panel set in gablehead. Single lights at 1st and 2nd floors between 1st and 2nd bays. Rounded angle to outer right.

N (MARCHMONT CRESCENT) ELEVATION: 3-bay. Altered shopfronts at ground. Bipartite windows in 1st bay; pediment to 3rd floor window. Single windows in 2nd bay. Single windows at 1st and 2nd floors in 3rd bay. 2nd and 3rd bays linked above eaves by gablet-crowstepped gable. Plate glass sash and case windows. Grey slate roof; 2 rendered and lined gablehead stacks; rendered and lined wallhead stack; scroll skewputts.

INTERIOR: not seen 1991.
