Description

This late 19th century building is a four-storey corner tenement located at 280, 282, and 284 Leith Walk in Edinburgh, featuring shops on the ground floor and elements of Baronial architecture. The exterior is constructed from cream sandstone, with stugged ashlar and polished dressings on the front and side elevations, while the rear is made of squared and snecked rubble. The shopfront openings have bold roll-moulded reveals, and there are roll-moulded reveals for the ground floor and corner bay windows. Cill courses are present on the first, second, and third floors, along with chamfered reveals. The third-floor windows break the eaves in finialled, moulded dormerheads.

On the southeast elevation facing Leith Walk, the building has five bays, including a rounded corner bay. The centre features an architraved common stair doorway, with a large segmental-arched shopfront opening to the right and a single window to the left. Above, there is a tall wallhead stack that is corbelled at the second floor in the centre bay, with single windows in the remaining bays. The corner bay on the outer left has a round-arched doorway with chamfered corners, featuring two-leaf panelled doors flanked by round-arched display windows on either side. Above this, there is a three-storey engaged round corner tower that is corbelled above, with transomed bipartite windows and a conical finialled fishscale roof.

The southwest elevation, facing Arthur Street, has a crowstepped gable with a broad apex stack, a round-arched display window, and single windows in the centre. The northwest elevation, or rear, has five bays with single windows in the outer bays and a broad wallhead stack in the centre bay.

The building features timber sash and case windows, mostly with plate glass glazing, including some four-pane and twelve-pane windows, as well as some replacement windows. The roof is slate with metal flashings, and there are two wallhead stacks, an apex stack, and a mutual stack, along with corbelled skewputts and a moulded eaves gutter. The interior was not seen in 1993.
