Description

1, 3, 5 Great Junction Street in Edinburgh is a plain classical tenement building dating from around 1800. It has an L-shaped plan and is situated on an obtusely angled corner site. The building is four storeys high with an attic and features shops at ground level. The exterior is made of cream sandstone, with ashlar stone on the principal elevations, polished at the ground floor, and droved above. The rear and side are constructed from coursed rubble with stugged dressings. Notable architectural details include a band course and cornice above the ground floor, a cill band course at the third floor, and an eaves cornice, which serves as a blocking course on the east elevation.

The east elevation, facing Leith Walk, has four bays and features pilastered shopfronts at the ground floor with small windows. Above, there are single windows on the upper floors, a truncated wallhead stack at the center, and two single dormers with half-piended roofs.

The northeast elevation, which faces Great Junction Street, has five bays with chamfered reveals at the doorways. The shopfronts at Nos 1, 3, and 5 are pilastered, with a public house at No 5 that includes stained glass top panels dating from around 1900. The remaining shopfronts have modern replacements. There are single windows on the upper floors, and the second bay has blocked windows.

The south elevation, facing Kirk Street, has four bays with three gabled bays to the right that feature an apex stack. The shopfronts have replacement windows, and there are two doorways on the outer left, along with a single dormer on the outer left.

The southwest elevation at the rear has irregularly placed windows and wallhead stacks. The building features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with plate glass windows at the rear. The roof is slate with metal flashings, and there are two apex stacks, a wallhead stack, and a mutual stack.

The interior was not seen in 1993.
