Description

244, 246, 248, 250, and 252 Leith Walk in Edinburgh is a four-storey tenement building designed by William Constable in 1902. The building features a chamfered corner and shops on the ground floor. It is constructed of cream sandstone with an ashlar front and coursed rubble at the rear. Notable architectural details include a continuous dentilled cornice above the shopfronts, a cill course at the first and second floors, a cill band course at the third floor, and an eaves cornice.

On the southeast elevation facing Leith Walk, the building has seven bays, including the chamfered corner bay, which has a blocking course with a tablet on the outer left. The central doorway leads to a common stair and features a panelled door with a plate glass fanlight, flanked by shopfronts that have mostly been altered. The fenestration is regular, with bipartite windows in the fourth and seventh bays from the left. There are two wallhead stacks.

The southwest elevation, facing Orchardfield Lane, has two bays with windows in the left bay and a tall wallhead stack in the right bay and on the outer left. The northwest elevation at the rear also has chamfered corners, regular fenestration, and a central wallhead stack.

The building features timber sash and case windows, mostly with plate glass glazing at the front, although some windows have been replaced. The rear has four-pane windows. The roof is slate with five wallhead stacks and a mutual stack, and there is a moulded eaves gutter. The interior was not seen in 1993.
