4 Smith's Place, Edinburgh

4 Smith's Place is an early 19th century, three-storey over basement, four-bay classical town house located in Edinburgh. The building features a polished sandstone ashlar frontage, with droved stonework at the basement and first floor. There is a band course at the principal and first floor levels, with rusticated masonry between the bays and voussoirs over the openings. The eaves are adorned with a cornice and a blocking course above.

The entrance door is situated in the bay to the left of centre, and the first floor windows have cills and aprons. The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case, and there is a later four-panelled door with a radial fanlight above. A cast-iron downpipe is located to the outer right, and there are bars on the basement windows.

Worn stone steps lead up to the entrance door, which is complemented by original wrought iron handrails. The property is bordered by a coped rubble dwarf wall with cast-iron railings above, featuring fleur-de-lys finials and pineapple finials at the corners.
