Description
This building, located at 187, 189, 191, and 193 Leith Walk in Edinburgh, is an early 19th-century, four-storey, nine-bay by five-bay classical tenement with a raised basement, which is mostly hidden by shopfronts at the ground floor. It features a rectangular plan with its main facades facing Leith Walk and Smith's Place, and includes a curved northwest corner. The ground floor is finished in polished sandstone ashlar, while the upper sections are made of droved ashlar, with coursed rubble on the northern and eastern (rear) elevations.
The shop units have modern plate glass windows and doors, and there is a string course and pulvinated frieze topped with a mutulated cornice. Band courses are present at the first and third floor levels, with a cornice and blocking course at the eaves. The western elevation has regular fenestration above the ground floor. The entrance door to the common stair at No. 191 is located in the sixth bay of the western elevation, featuring a dentilled cornice and a tall basket-arched plate-glass fanlight above.
On the northern elevation facing Smith's Place, there are five bays that slightly advance from the corner strips, topped with a corniced and pedimented gable. A section of the original ground floor is visible to the outer left of the shopfront, with single basement and ground floor windows still intact. The elevation displays channelled ashlar rustication with voussoirs above the windows, and the first floor windows have cills and aprons below. The outer bays to the right have blind windows above the ground.
The northern elevation also features modern plate glass windows and doors for the shop units, along with a six-panelled tenement door and a plate glass fanlight. The upper floors and the ground floor of the northern elevation at the first bay have 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate in an M-shape, piended at the north behind the pediment. There is a cast-iron downpipe at the northwest corner and coped ashlar multi-flue apex stacks, paired at the southern elevation gableheads, northern pediment, and centring ridges. An additional coped ashlar multi-flue wallhead stack is located at the northern end of the western elevation, with all stacks featuring circular cans.
