Description
236 Leith Walk is a mid-19th century, four-storey, nine-bay tenement building. It features a central pend and shops on the ground floor, with deck access balconies at the rear. The front is made of cream sandstone, with coursed and squared stugged rubble and droved dressings, while the rear is constructed from squared and snecked rubble, and the northeast elevation has coursed and squared rubble.
The central bays have moulded cill courses on the first and second floors, a band cill course on the third floor, and an eaves cornice with a blocking course that bears a tablet for each three-bay section. The shopfronts have a later continuous dentilled cornice that continues on Nos 244-252, along with basket-arched and roll-moulded display windows, recessed doorways to the left, and panelled dividing pilasters. Notably, No 240 has been altered.
On the southeast (front) elevation, there is a tall roll-moulded carriage pend in the center, adorned with elaborate decorative two-leaf cast-iron gates. To the right, there are three shops, and to the left, two shops with a doorway to the common stair on the outer left, all featuring carved console brackets supporting the cornice. The fenestration above is regular, with the three central bays slightly recessed and framed by carved emblems that once held a signboard.
The northwest (rear) elevation has tall ground floor openings that have been bricked up. Above these, there are three rows of cantilevered cast-iron access balconies supported by slender columns and concrete decks, with doorways alternating with paired windows.
The northeast elevation is gabled with an apex stack and has two windows at the ground floor. The building features four-pane timber sash and case windows and a black slate roof with mutual coped stacks that have been rebuilt.
Inside, there is a stone stair with cast-iron balusters.
