4, 6, 8 Union Street, Edinburgh

4, 6, 8 Union Street is an early 19th century, three-storey terraced tenement with an attic and basement, featuring a 12-bay façade arranged in groups of three, five, and four. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and includes a later 19th century shopfront and a carriage pend located in the right bays at ground level. Notable architectural details include a cill band at the first floor, projecting cills at the second floor, a string course at the third floor topped with a mutule cornice, and fascia bands on the shopfronts.

The principal elevation has nine bays at ground level, with three late 19th century shopfronts in the outer bays to the left. There is a recessed entrance bay between the shopfronts to the right, featuring a timber door with a fanlight and nookshafts supporting basket-arched windows adorned with decorative capitals and a shared mutule cornice. The carriage pend is located at the centre bay and is segmental-arched with a keystone, above which are two windowed bays.

The basement has spearheaded railings across four bays to the right, with an entrance at the penultimate bay that includes a panelled timber door with sidelights and a round-arched fanlight, along with fenestration in the flanking bays. The upper floors feature regular fenestration, with timber sash and case windows that have 12-pane glazing, and six tripartite piended dormers above. The roof is topped with a towering mutual ridge stack that has terracotta cans, and the building is covered with grey slates. The interior was not seen in 1998.
