Description
2 Union Street in Edinburgh is a terraced corner tenement building designed by Robert Burn, planned in 1800. It features a 10-bay by 5-bay layout with a bowed 3-bay corner, standing three stories tall with an attic and shops on the ground floor. The exterior is constructed of sandstone ashlar and includes a cill band at the first floor, projecting cills at the second floor, an eaves band, and a blocking course.
On the southeast elevation facing Union Place, there is a modern shop at ground level. The upper floors have regular window arrangements, although the 4th, 7th, and 9th bays from the left are blinded for symmetry. Above, there are piended dormers, including two tripartite dormers on the left, and a common stair door located in the 7th bay from the left, topped with a tall 9-pane fanlight.
The southwest elevation features a chamfered ground level with a door leading to a modern shopfront. Above, there is a corner round tower in the recessed angle, with three regular windows on each floor.
The northeast elevation, also facing Union Street, has a modern shop at ground level. The upper floors display regular fenestration, although the 1st and 4th bays from the left are blocked. There are three box dormers above.
The building has timber sash and case windows with 12-pane glazing, roof lights, grey slate roofing, ridge stacks, and terracotta cans. The piended dormers are located on the southeast elevation, while the northeast features box dormers.
The interior was not seen in 1998.
