Description

10 and 12 Marchmont Road is a four-storey, four-bay tenement built around 1878, designed in the Scottish 17th century style. It is part of a terrace and constructed from squared and snecked bull-faced sandstone, featuring polished ashlar dressings. The building has a base course and a corbel table at the third floor, which forms a hoodmoulding above a central heraldic panel. The third-floor windows break the eaves and have stop-chamfered reveals.

On the entrance elevation, there are two roll-moulded and hoodmoulded doorways leading to the inner bays, with panelled doors and plate glass fanlights above. There is a single window at ground level and single windows above the doorways on all floors. The third-floor windows are topped with pedimented dormerheads that have stone finials. The outer left bay features a full-height, crowstepped, advanced bipartite window with a thistle finial, while the outer right bay has a full-height, angled two-light window that is corbelled to a square at the gablehead, also topped with a stone finial. The building has plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and a corbelled wallhead stack with heavy bracketed coping, along with coped mutual stacks, moulded cans, scroll skewputts, and stone gutter stops. The interiors were not seen in 1991. There is a low coped boundary wall along the street.
