Description
This building at 18 Marchmont Road in Edinburgh, dating from around 1882, is a four-storey, four-bay tenement designed in the Jacobean style and is part of a terrace. It is constructed from squared and snecked bull-faced sandstone with polished ashlar dressings and has been stone-cleaned. The building features a base course, a corbel table that steps down to the center, chamfered reveals, and cornicing above the ground and second floors on the outer bays.
The entrance elevation has a corniced and roll-moulded doorway at the center, which is adorned with a carved strapwork pediment, a panelled door, and a plate glass fanlight. Above, there is a carved surround featuring a heraldic panel at the second floor, with a blank heraldic panel at the eaves. The flanking bays contain single windows, with those at the third floor breaking the eaves and corniced, topped with a linking crowstepped gable. To the left, there is a decorative cast-iron window guard at the first floor. The outer left bay has a full-height advanced bipartite window that breaks the eaves, culminating in a stone finialled gable with a blank heraldic panel set in the gablehead. The outer right bay features a full-height canted window that also breaks the eaves, finished with a cornice and a Jacobean style pediment. The windows throughout are plate glass sash and case. The roof is covered in grey slate, with a corbelled and corniced gablehead stack, coped mutual stacks, and scrolled skewputts.
The property has a low coped boundary wall along the street. The interiors were not seen in 1991.
