Description

This building at 11 Marchmont Road in Edinburgh dates from around 1880 and is a four-storey, four-bay tenement designed in the Scottish 17th century style. It is part of a terrace and is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. Notable architectural features include a base course, a string course above the ground floor, a corbel table at the third floor, and stop-chamfered reveals.

The west entrance elevation features a central stop-chamfered doorway, flanked on the right by a single window. The doorway has a deep-set panelled door topped with a plate glass fanlight. Above, there are single windows, and the third-floor window has a pedimented and finialled dormer head. The outer right bay has full-height advanced bipartite windows with dividing cornices, a machicolation moulding at the second-floor cornice, and a finialled and crow-stepped dormer head. A blank heraldic shield is set in a circular moulding at the gable head. The second bay features a full-height canted window with ogival and keel-shaped roof and a decorative cast-iron finial. The outer left bay has single windows and a finialled semi-circular dormer head at the third floor. The building is finished with plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, a rendered and coped mutual stack, and moulded cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1991. There is a low boundary wall along the street.
