Description
36 and 38 Main Street in Wishaw is a two-storey tenement building with an attic, constructed in 1879. It features a rectangular plan and has three bays, with shops located on the ground floor. The exterior is made of yellow ashlar sandstone and includes a dividing cornice, an eaves band, a cornice, and a blocking course.
The principal elevation faces southwest and is symmetrical. It has a shouldered-arch door at the center with a tall fanlight above, flanked by broad pilasters with bead-moulded capitals. There are modern shopfronts on either side. A cavetto-moulded cornice separates the floors, and there is a central full-height wallhead chimney with a large dormer on either side. The segmental-arched windows have flanking pilaster margins, and the outer bipartite windows have pilastered mullions. The eaves course is plain, and there is a projecting plain cornice. The central chimney is battered and features a datestone marked '1879'. The canted dormers have overhanging gable eaves and decorative fretted barge boarding.
The rear elevation, facing northeast, is constructed of random sandstone rubble and has irregular fenestration. The southeast and northwest elevations are adjoining buildings.
The windows are plate glass timber sash and case, with double-glazed dormers. The roof is covered with grey slates and has coped sandstone stacks at the gable ends, coped skews, and cast-iron rainwater goods. There is decorative cast-iron cresting along the roof ridge.
The interior was not seen in 2000.
