Description
40, 42, 48, 50 Main Street in Wishaw is a later 19th century, two-storey, four-bay tenement building with shops on the ground floor. It is constructed from yellow ashlar sandstone and features large canted gable dormers and tripartite windows.
The southwest, or principal elevation, is symmetrical with regular window placement and a plain dividing band between the ground and first floors. It has tripartite segmental arch windows with engaged column mullions topped with Corinthian capitals, plain projected architraves with keystones, a plain eaves course, and a projecting cornice. The ground floor has a modern shop front.
The northeast, or rear elevation, has irregular window placement and is made of squared sandstone. There is a forestair to the left with a wooden lean-to porch, and a square-plan stair tower to the right with a piended roof.
The southeast side elevation is obscured by an adjacent building, while the northwest side elevation is blank and partially obscured as well.
The building has modern double glazing, grey slates with lead ridges, and coped sandstone stacks at the gable ends and ridge. The interior features modern shop fittings.
