49 Bath Street, Glasgow

49 Bath Street in Glasgow is a four-storey office building with an attic and roof dormers, designed by Stanley Birkett between 1932 and 1934. This Beaux Arts structure features a prominent chamfered corner and is constructed with polished grey granite at the ground level of the corner block, channeled yellow sandstone ashlar on the wing, and ashlar on the upper floors. The building has plain giant order pilasters on the second and third storeys, a dividing band between the first and second storeys, a continuous frieze, and a projecting cornice on the third storey, along with an eaves course at the attic storey.

On the east elevation facing Renfield Street, there is a bronzed, two-leaf panelled door at the centre, flanked by large plate glass windows and bronzed pilasters. Above these, modern shop signage is displayed on the frieze. The second and third storeys feature a tripartite window in the centre with flanking windows, bronzed panels beneath the windows, and a projecting cast-iron balcony on the second storey. The frieze on the third storey is inscribed with "REFUGE ASSURANCE BUILDINGS." The narrow attic storey mirrors the lower floors and has three large box dormers on the roof.

The north elevation on Bath Street is a three-bay corner block that mirrors the east elevation, except for three plate glass windows at the ground level and regular fenestration on the upper storeys. The four-bay wing to the right has a timber panelled door on the outer left, with channeled ashlar pilasters on the bays to the right and an exposed basement. The upper storeys feature regular fenestration, with stone mullioned bipartite windows on the second and third storeys and mullioned tripartite windows at the attic storey, along with four large box dormers on the roof.

The west side elevation is obscured by an adjoining building, while the south side elevation is partially obscured, showing a broad gable stack. The windows are fixed-pane with bronzed steel frames, and the building has a Mansard roof covered with grey slates and lead flashing, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, a modern glass lobby door leads to the stairwell, which has been refurbished but retains its original cast-iron balustrading. The original timber panelled offices to the right include leaded glass screens. Additionally, there are geometric cast-iron railings in front of the exposed basement area.
