Description

H and D barclay; 1878. Square symmetrical school with

Grecian details. Built on raised podium; 2 storeys,

attics and basement. 7-bay elevation arranged 1-5-1.

Polished ashlar, partly channelled at ground. Wide

channelled pilasters at angles and terminal bays. Wide

flight of steps rise to massive central block-pediment

doorpieces with ramped architraves, panelled wooden

outer door. All windows set in polished ashlar masonry

panels except at ground floor terminal bays which are

channelled. All windows with ramped architraves and

aprons. At 1st floor centre 5 bays recessed in

hexa-style Ionic colonnade, flanked by channelled

pilasters; plate-glass glazing, pivot windows. Heavy

band course over ground, eaves course; heavy

bracketted cornice. 5 flat-roofed dormers; slate roofs.

Interior: Glazed vestibule screens with ramped and

architraved doorpiece with stylized scroll pediment.

Fine acid etched glass to door panels and sidelights.

Classrooms arranged round central well/cortile with fine

cast-iron or wooden parapet balustrade. To S. at ground

floor, massive Corinthian column screen leads to stair.

All doors in ramped architrves with cornice/pediment.

At N. and S. walls of attic floor, war memorial panels.
