Description
Pollokshields Primary School, located at 241 Albert Drive in Pollokshields, Glasgow, was designed by H and D Barclay in 1882 as a variant of their palazzo-style pattern for Glasgow's board schools. The building is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay elevation facing Albert Drive. It features wide three-light windows with pilastered mullions that are fluted at the ground level, and sculptured panels on the first floor. The central bay is narrower and includes a doorpiece at the ground level. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar, with a band course between the floors, original T-shaped glazing patterns, a mutule cornice, and piended slate roofs. The flank elevations are similarly detailed, showcasing recessed wide centres. On Herriet Street, there is a plainer and later range built in 1901, which serves as the Albert Road Academy and is of similar scale with a symmetrical front. The playground is partially enclosed by a stone wall and iron railings, featuring square gatepiers.
