Description
The War Memorial at Berriedale was designed in 1919 by Sir Ernest George and Alfred B Yeates and erected in 1919-20 by William Arthur, 6th Duke of Portland. It stands on a low, wide platform of polished Caithness slabs bordered by polished granite, and is approached by low steps separated from the adjacent road by a low coped rubble wall. The memorial itself is constructed from polished granite on a plinth with a moulded cornice; the east face features a pediment filled with carved thistles and an inscribed bronze plaque below. An ogee finial supports a bronze figure of St Andrew. The memorial lists the names of those who died in the 1914-18 war, with those who died in the 1939-45 war added later. The names of the architects and designers are inscribed on the plinth.
