Description
Valley Cottage is a mid-18th century cottage that was formerly two attached homes, located next to a former laundry in Melbury Sampford. The building features coursed rubble-stone walls and a thatched roof with gable ends. There are brick stacks on the left-hand gable, at the ridge right of center, and on the right-hand gable. The cottage is 1 and a half storeys tall and has five windows, which are cast-iron casements with glazing bars, along with wooden cills and lintels. It also has four half-dormers, each with 2-light cast-iron casements and glazing bars, and wooden cills. There are two doorways, one left of center and one right of center, both with plank doors and weatherboarding. Each door has a trelliswork porch. Additionally, there is a rubble-stone outhouse with a tiled roof, and a plank door leading to a coal-store and privy. Inside, the fireplace in the northeast end features a slight-chamfered bressumer.
