Description
The Stable Yard immediately north of Melbury House is an attached stable yard that includes the west block of the former north courtyard. The west block dates from the late 17th century, while the early 19th-century stable yard is located immediately to the west of this. The structure features Ham stone ashlar walls and Westmoreland slate roofs with gable ends, and it has three stacks on the ridge. The south end has been truncated, and a castellated parapet was added by Devey. The building is two storeys high with attics and consists of 12 bays.
The windows are two-light with Ham stone architraves and cills, featuring flat stone mullions. They include iron casements with lead lights and 20th-century metal casements with lead lights. The central three bays have a pediment above, which is topped with an octagonal bellcote. The central doorway is adorned with an eared architrave, a pulvinated frieze, and a moulded stone cornice, leading to a two-leaf plank door. There is a blocked doorway towards the south end and four blocked windows along with another blocked doorway towards the north end of the front.
The main stable yard, built behind this front, was constructed in 1801-1802 by J Brettingham and is one and a half storeys tall. It has main entrances on the north and south sides, with the northern entrance featuring a segmental head. The windows in this area are two-light with cross-transom stone mullions, equipped with cast-iron casements and glazing bars. Inside the north side, the layout includes a series of windows and doors, while the south side has a similar arrangement of doors and windows. The west side of the yard includes three former carriage entrances and two garage entrances, all with plank doors.
