Description

Neil C Duff, 1903. Pair of substantial 2-storey, 3-bay houses with large and individually designed angle towers. Squared and snecked red sandstone rubble with polished dressings. Each house with canted, 4-light mullion and transom window at ground to centre, tripartite above; entrance in centre bay with wide recessed door set in shelved lugged architraves; outer bays advanced chamfered at ground with tripartite 1st floor set back, with pilaster strips at angles rising into decorative parapets, large 1st floor window with segmental head. Tower to No 3: drum shaped for 2 stages, corbelled to octagonal for 3rd stage, corbelled, castellated parapet, small flat-headed or segmental windows, arrow slits in 3rd. Tower to No 5: 2 drum stages and tall upper band, one conical finialled roof. Windows at No 3. Each house with large rear with tall 9-light mullion and transom, cusp-headed stair window. Most windows mullion and transom with small-pane glazing. Westmoreland slate roof with decorative red tiled ridge; tall coped stacks.
