14 Crichton Road, Rothesay, Bute

14 Crichton Road in Rothesay, Bute, is a pair of late 19th century flatted houses, likely built around 1885. These two-storey, three-bay homes form a symmetrical six-bay block, constructed from coursed stugged yellow sandstone with polished sandstone dressings. The design features a raised base course, corniced bays at the ground level, and timber bracketed corniced eaves.

The houses have shouldered openings on both floors, with chamfered reveals and cills. Above the single first-floor windows, there are architraved hoodmoulds. The outer left and right bays are topped with octagonal French-pavilion towers, with cast-iron brattishing on the right. The door surrounds are stop-chamfered, with scrolled detailing at the base, and the entrances are highlighted by round-arched, double-bracketed timber canopies that include timber fretwork, architraved surrounds, anthemion details, and foliate finials. The sides of the building feature harl-pointed rubble.

On the northwest (entrance) elevation, steps lead up to two-leaf timber panelled doors located in the penultimate bays on the outer right (No 14) and left (No 15). These doors are adorned with dentil detailing beneath plate-glass fanlights and are sheltered by projecting round-arched canopies. The first floor has single windows aligned above, while the outer bays feature three-light canted windows at both floors beneath the octagonal towers. The slightly advanced central bays contain two tripartite windows at both floors.

The windows are predominantly two-pane timber sash and case, although No 14 has modern glazing on the first floor. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring fish-scale slate detailing on the French-pavilion towers and small, slightly bell-cast grey slate piends on the advanced central bays. A coped central stack with circular cans completes the roofline.

The interiors were not seen in 1996. The property is bordered by a low, coped whitewashed wall along Crichton Road, with square-plan piers flanking the entrance to No 15, while the pier for No 14 is missing.
