Description
21 Crichton Road in Rothesay, Bute, is a late 19th-century building, dating around 1885. It features a nearly symmetrical design with two stories and an attic, consisting of a four-bay gabled block divided into three houses arranged in a 1-2-1 formation. There are single-storey piended wings made of sandstone rubble that are set back to the outer right (entrance No 19) and left (entrance No 21).
The exterior is constructed from coursed yellow sandstone ashlar with raised polished dressings, including a polished base course and a raised string course. The eaves are overhanging and supported by timber brackets. The building has raised yellow ashlar quoins, architraved openings, chamfered window reveals, and chamfered cills, with stone mullions in the tripartite windows. Notable details include dentil work beneath the bracketed cornices above the central first-floor windows, boarded timber hipped gabled bays on the outer left and right, and cast-iron finials.
On the northern elevation, there are steps leading to a two-leaf timber panelled door (No 20) located off-center to the right. This door features a plate-glass fanlight and an architraved surround. A single window is positioned above on the first floor, with a triangular attic light above that. To the left of center, there is a piended four-light canted window at ground level and a tripartite window on the first floor. A three-light dormer is centered in a small hipped dormer above, topped with a cast-iron floral finial. The outer left and right bays have tripartite windows on both floors that are slightly advanced, with pointed-arched tripartite dormers in the hipped gables above, each surmounted by a foliate finial. The piended wings are recessed to the outer right (No 19) and left (No 21).
The windows predominantly feature decorative stained glass in the upper sections and plate glass in the lower sections, with some replacement glazing in the ground-level bay to the outer right. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, and there are replacement rainwater goods. The building has corniced ridge and apex stacks with various circular cans.
The interiors were not seen in 1996.
The boundary wall consists of a low coped stugged squared and snecked grey sandstone wall along Crichton Road. Square-plan piers flank the pedestrian entrances to Nos 19 and 20, featuring a raised base course, roll-moulded detailing, an architraved cornice, and triangular faceted caps.
