Description

23 Crichton Road is a double villa designed by John Duncan and dated 1878. It is a symmetrical, two-storey building with eight bays, reflecting the Alexander Thomson style, and forms the end of a symmetrical terrace. The villa is grouped in a 2-4-2 arrangement with an advanced central gable. It features coursed stugged sandstone with polished yellow sandstone dressings, a raised base course, timber bracketed canopies, bracketed first-floor balconies, and overhanging timber eaves with decorative fretwork on the gable. The building has yellow sandstone quoins, long and short surrounds to openings, sandstone mullions, projecting cills, and foliate stencil detailing above the first-floor windows.

On the northern (entrance) elevation, there are two-leaf timber panelled doors at ground level in the penultimate bays on the outer left and right, with bracketed canopies above. There are single windows at the first floor, and single windows at ground level in the outer bays. The advanced four-bay centre has two 4-light angled glazing rows at ground level, with timber balconies (part missing at No 24) beneath four single windows centered at the first floor under the gable. No 23 has replacement glazing, while No 24 retains 2-pane timber sash and case glazing. The roof is covered with graded grey slate and features terracotta ridge tiling, central ridge and apex stacks, and octagonal cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1996. The boundary walls consist of a low coped wall (part whitewashed) along Crichton Road, with a whitewashed, shouldered-arched datestone inscribed "Brighton Terrace 1878" and topped with an anthemion finial. The square-plan panelled gatepiers have triangular-faceted caps.
