Description

29 Crichton Road is a double villa built in 1878 in the style of architect Alexander Thomson. This symmetrical, two-storey building features eight bays and forms part of a symmetrical terrace. The arrangement of the bays is grouped as 1-1-4-1-1, with the center and the outer left and right bays recessed, while the penultimate bays on both sides are advanced and gabled. The exterior is constructed of coursed stugged sandstone with polished yellow sandstone dressings. It has a raised base course and raised cill courses at both the ground and first floors, along with overhanging timber bracketed eaves. Sandstone quoins, long and short surrounds to openings, sandstone mullions, and projecting cills add to the architectural detail.

On the northern entrance elevation, there are two-leaf timber panelled doors located in recessed bays on the outer right and left. No 29 has a bracketed entrance canopy, while No 30 features a columnar porch with a balustraded balcony. The first floor has single windows aligned above the doors. The advanced bays on either side of the center contain three-light canted windows at the ground floor and projecting bipartite windows with swept eaves at the first floor, both beneath fretted gables. The four recessed bays at the center have single windows on both floors.

The ground floor of No 29 has replacement glazing, while the remaining openings feature two-pane timber sash and case glazing. The roof is covered with graded grey slate and has terracotta ridge tiling, with central ridge and apex stacks topped with octagonal cans.

The boundary walls consist of a low coped whitewashed wall along Crichton Road, which includes a whitewashed, shouldered-arched datestone inscribed "Brighton Terrace 1878" and topped with an anthemion finial. The square-plan panelled gatepiers have triangular-faceted caps.
