Description

33 Crichton Road is a double villa built in 1878 by John Duncan, designed in the style of Alexander Thomson. This symmetrical, two-storey building features eight bays and forms the end of a symmetrical terrace. The layout is grouped in a 2-4-2 arrangement with an advanced central gable. The exterior is constructed from coursed stugged sandstone with polished yellow sandstone dressings, including a raised base course, timber bracketed canopies, and bracketed balconies on the first floor. The eaves are overhanging, and there are yellow sandstone quoins, long and short surrounds to openings, sandstone mullions, projecting cills, and foliate stencil detailing above the first-floor windows.

On the north elevation, the entrance features two-leaf timber panelled doors located in the penultimate bays on the outer left and right, with bracketed canopies above. There are single windows on the first floor and additional single windows at ground level in the outer bays. The advanced four-bay centre includes two rows of four-light angled glazing at ground level, with a full-width, ball-finialed balcony beneath four single windows centered under the gable, although the fretwork is missing. The windows are 2-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered with graded grey slate and features terracotta ridge tiling, with central ridge and apex stacks, as well as various octagonal and circular chimney cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1996. The boundary walls consist of a low coped wall, partly rendered, along Crichton Road, with a whitewashed, shouldered-arched datestone inscribed "Brighton Terrace 1878" and topped with an anthemion finial. The square-plan panelled gatepiers have triangular-faceted caps.
