Description
26 Crichton Road is a double villa designed by John Duncan and dated 1878. This symmetrical, two-storey building features eight bays in the style of Alexander Thomson and is part of a symmetrical terrace. The layout is grouped as 2-1-2-1-2, with a slightly advanced gabled center and full-height engaged octagonal towers on either side. The outer right and left sides have gableted eaves. The villa is constructed of coursed stugged sandstone with polished yellow sandstone dressings, and it has a raised base course, overhanging timber bracketed eaves, and scalloped eaves beneath the towers. Sandstone quoins, long and short surrounds to openings, sandstone mullions, and projecting cills are also present, along with side entrances.
On the north (entrance) elevation, there are bipartite windows at both the ground and first floors in the two central bays. The flanking octagonal towers each feature bipartite windows on both floors, topped with octagonal caps and cast-iron finials. There are single narrow windows at both floors in the penultimate bays on the outer right and left, as well as single windows at the ground level in the bays on the outer right and left. The first floor has bipartite windows beneath the gabled eaves, which are fretted, and there are canopied side entrances.
The villa has 2-pane timber sash and case glazing, a graded grey slate roof, grey slate octagonal caps on the towers, and terracotta ridge tiling. It features central ridge and apex stacks with octagonal cans.
The boundary walls consist of a low coped whitewashed wall along Crichton Road, which includes a whitewashed, shouldered-arched datestone inscribed "Brighton Terrace 1878" topped with an anthemion finial. The square-plan panelled gatepiers have triangular-faceted caps.
