Description
27 Crichton Road is a double villa built in 1878 by John Duncan, designed in the style of Alexander Thomson. This symmetrical, two-storey building features eight bays and is part of a symmetrical terrace. The layout is grouped as 1-1-4-1-1, with the center and the outer left and right bays recessed, while the penultimate bays on the outer sides are advanced and gabled. The villa is constructed from coursed stugged sandstone with polished yellow sandstone dressings, and includes a raised base course and a raised cill course at the ground level. The windows are corniced and canted, with timber bracketed canopies above them, and there is a timber bracketed balcony on the first floor, although the balustrade is missing. The eaves are overhanging and also supported by timber brackets. Additional features include sandstone quoins, long and short surrounds to the openings, sandstone mullions, and projecting cills.
On the north (entrance) elevation, there are two-leaf timber panelled doors located in recessed bays on the outer right and left, each with a bracketed canopy above. The first floor has single windows aligned above these doors. The advanced bays on either side of the center contain three-light canted windows at the ground level and projecting bipartite windows with swept eaves on the first floor, both beneath fretted gables. The center has four recessed bays with single windows on both floors.
The villa has 2-pane timber sash and case glazing and is topped with a graded grey slate roof featuring terracotta ridge tiling. There are central ridge and apex stacks with octagonal cans.
The interiors were not seen in 1996. The boundary walls consist of a low coped whitewashed wall along Crichton Road, which includes a whitewashed, shouldered-arched datestone inscribed "Brighton Terrace 1878" topped with an anthemion finial. The square-plan panelled gatepiers have triangular-faceted caps.
