Description
32 Crichton Road is a double villa designed by John Duncan and dated 1878, showcasing the Alexander Thomson style. This symmetrical two-storey building features eight bays and is part of a symmetrical terrace. The design includes a slightly advanced, gabled center flanked by full-height engaged octagonal towers, with gableted eaves on the outer sides. The exterior is constructed of coursed stugged sandstone with polished yellow sandstone dressings, a raised base course, and overhanging timber bracketed eaves. The eaves beneath the towers are scalloped, and the building has sandstone quoins, long and short surrounds to openings, sandstone mullions, and projecting cills, as well as side entrances.
On the north (entrance) elevation, there are bipartite windows at both the ground and first floors in the two central bays. The flanking octagonal towers also feature bipartite windows on both floors, topped with octagonal caps and a cast-iron finial on No 32 (which is missing on No 31). There are single narrow windows at both floors in the penultimate bays on the outer right and left, as well as a single window at the ground level in those same outer bays. The first floor has bipartite windows beneath the gabled eaves, although the fretwork is missing on No 32. The entrances on the sides are canopied.
The villa has 2-pane timber sash and case glazing, a graded grey slate roof, grey slate octagonal caps on the towers, and terracotta ridge tiling. It features central ridge and apex stacks, with octagonal cans that are missing on the west side.
The boundary walls consist of a low coped whitewashed wall along Crichton Road, which includes a whitewashed, shouldered-arched datestone inscribed "Brighton Terrace 1878" and topped with an anthemion finial. The square-plan panelled gatepiers have triangular-faceted caps.
