Description
11 Crichton Road in Rothesay, Bute, is a pair of late 19th century houses, believed to have been built around 1885. These two-storey, three-bay homes form a symmetrical six-bay block, constructed from coursed stugged yellow sandstone with polished sandstone dressings. They feature a raised base course, corniced bays at the ground level, and timber bracketed corniced eaves. The openings on both floors are shouldered, with chamfered reveals, chamfered cills, and architraved hoodmoulds above single first-floor windows. The door surrounds are stop-chamfered, with scrolled detailing at the base, and the entrances are adorned with round-arched, double-bracketed timber canopies that include timber fretwork, architraved surrounds, anthemion details, and foliate finials. The northeast side has random rubble sandstone, while the southwest side is harled.
On the northwest (entrance) elevation, there are steps leading to two-leaf timber panelled doors located in the penultimate bays on the outer right (No 10) and left (No 11). These doors are topped with dentil detailing beneath plate-glass fanlights and are sheltered by projecting round-arched canopies. The first floor has single windows aligned above, while the outer bays feature three-light canted windows on both floors. The central bays have two tripartite windows at the ground and first floors, slightly advanced from the main façade.
The glazing in No 10 has been modernized at both floors, and No 11 has modern glazing on the first floor, while the ground floor retains two-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring small, slightly bell-cast grey slate piends on the advanced central bays. Decorative rainwater goods are present at the front, and there is a coped sandstone stack at the center, although the cans are missing.
The interiors were not seen in 1996. The property is bounded by a low coped painted wall, which is part-rendered, along Crichton Road.
