Description

3 Whittinghame Gardens is a two-storey Edwardian villa built around 1903, designed in the Scottish revival style that incorporates elements of Scots Baronial and 17th century Renaissance architecture. The exterior is constructed from bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings. It features cill courses, ashlar mullioned windows with stop-chamfered arrises, and decorative cartouches on the first floor window aprons on the north elevation. The windows are topped with crowstepped dormerheads that break the eaves.

On the north (entrance) elevation, the villa has a three-bay layout with a two-storey block that is recessed to the right and a porch located in the re-entrant angle. The porch is advanced and has an ashlar construction with a roll-moulded surround, a balustraded parapet, and a raised ashlar panel at the center, leading to two-leaf panelled doors. Above the porch, there is a dormerheaded window to the left, with a flanking window on the left side. The right side features a taller crowstepped gable on the two-storey block, which includes full-height canted windows. The left side has an advanced three-bay block with a bipartite window at the ground level and a dormerheaded window above. The right side also has full-height canted windows with a 1-2-1 light arrangement, and a full-height semi-octagonal bay that projects from the left angle, complete with a balustraded parapet and ball finials.

The elevation features an advanced two-storey block at the center with a canted window at the ground level and a crenellated parapet. Above, there is a dormerheaded bipartite window, and a V-plan window projects to the right with another dormerheaded bipartite window above.

The villa has timber sash and case windows with various glazing patterns, including 6-pane lower sashes and 4-pane upper sashes, as well as some 9-pane and 6-pane upper windows. The roof is covered with grey/green slate, although some stacks have been unsympathetically renewed in cream sandstone ashlar and red brick. The property also features cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior has not been seen.
