Description
7 Whittinghame Gardens is a two-storey Edwardian villa built around 1903 by Fryers & Penman, showcasing a Scottish revival style that incorporates elements of Scots Baronial and 17th century Renaissance design. The villa is constructed from bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring a cill course, string course, and ashlar mullioned windows that have stop-chamfered arisses. The windows are topped with crowstepped dormerheads that break the eaves.
On the north elevation, the entrance features a prominent canted doorcase that is set forward at the center. This doorcase has a cavetto and roll-moulded surround, with a vertically panelled door that includes small diamond-pane glazed panels. Above the door is a semi-circular fanlight with small lead-paned glazing, and a hoodmould with carved label stops. The angles of the doorcase are accentuated by clustered colonnetes, and there is a finely carved ashlar panel above the doorway. Inside, there is a marble-tiled vestibule with a half-glazed vestibule door and flanking sidelights. Above the doorway, a corniced window with a roll-moulded surround can be found. To the right, a full-height semi-octagonal bay projects out with regular fenestration and a balustraded parapet. To the left, there is a full-height canted window with 1-2-1 lights. A curved bay projects eastward from the outer left.
The east elevation features a curved bay on the outer right, with a window that has a roll-moulded surround facing northeast at the first floor. There are additional windows at both the ground and first floors to the right, and a wallhead stack at the center. To the left, there is a full-height canted window. A bipartite window is located at the ground level on the far left, with a bipartite dormer-headed window above it. A single-storey block abuts the outer left.
On the west elevation, a V-plan window projects to the center, accompanied by a dormer-headed bipartite window. There is also a full-height canted window with 1-2-1 lights on the outer right.
Most of the windows are timber sash and case, featuring single-pane glazing in the lower sashes and 9-pane glazing in the upper sashes, with some Art Nouveau stained glass panes. The roof is covered with grey/green slate, and there are ashlar stacks and cast-iron rainwater goods.
The gatepiers consist of red sandstone ashlar drum piers topped with pyramidal caps.
