Description
10 Whittinghame Gardens is a two-storey Edwardian villa built around 1904 by Fryers & Penman, designed in the Scottish Revival style with elements of Scots Baronial and 17th century Renaissance architecture. The villa is constructed from bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring cill courses, ashlar mullioned windows with stop-chamfered arisses, and a crenellated parapet above the projecting windows. Notable decorative elements include cartouche decorations on the first-floor window aprons on the north elevation and crowstepped dormerheads on windows that break the eaves.
The north (entrance) elevation presents a three-bay facade, with a two-storey block recessed to the left and a porch located in the re-entrant angle. The advanced ashlar porch has a rope-moulded surround and a balustraded parapet featuring a raised panel with a lion rampant. It includes two-leaf panelled storm doors and a partly glazed vestibule door. Above the porch is a dormer-headed window, while to the left, the taller crowstepped gable of the two-storey block features full-height canted windows. The advanced three-bay block to the right has a bipartite window at the ground level and a finialled dormer-headed window above. The left side has full-height canted windows arranged in a 1-2-1 light pattern, and there is a semi-octagonal bay canted out from the right angle, complete with regular fenestration and a balustraded parapet adorned with urn-like finials. A small bartizan is positioned in the angle to the left.
The west elevation features a V-plan window projecting to the centre, with a bipartite dormer-headed window above it, and a full-height canted window to the right. The villa is fitted with two-pane timber sash and case windows and has a grey/green slate roof with corniced sandstone stacks, some of which have been partly reduced on the west elevation. The property also includes cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior has not been seen. The gatepiers are made of red sandstone ashlar with drum piers topped with pyramidal caps, and there are two-leaf wrought-iron gates.
