Description

9 Whittinghame Gardens is a two-storey Edwardian villa built in 1904 by Fryers & Penman, showcasing a Scottish revival style that combines elements of Scots baronial and 17th century Renaissance architecture. The exterior is constructed of bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring a cill course, string course, and ashlar mullioned windows that have stop-chamfered arisses. Notable decorative features include cartouche decoration on the first-floor window aprons on the north elevation and crow-stepped dormer heads on windows that break the eaves.

On the north (entrance) elevation, there is a recessed bay at the center with an off-center left doorway that has two-leaf fanlit half-glazed doors. This entrance is screened by a full-width loggia or porch, which features a tripartite basket-arched arcade and a rope-moulded surround to the arched entrance of the center bay. An ashlar balustrade on a stone base separates the arches of the flanking bays, and there is a balustraded parapet with a raised panel dated 1904 at the center. A dormer-headed window is located off-center to the left on the first floor. To the right, a full-height semi-octagonal bay projects from the right angle, while the left bay has full-height canted windows arranged in a 1-2-1 light pattern.

The west elevation features a v-plan window that projects to the center, with a bipartite dormer-headed window above it. To the right, there are full-height canted windows with a 1-2-1 light arrangement. The east elevation includes a deep canted stair window at the center, with three windows at ground level and three tall transomed stair lights above. There is a window to the left at ground level and a bipartite window on the far left, with a bipartite dormer-headed window above.

The south (rear) elevation has a single-storey service wing that adjoins the main structure. The villa is fitted with timber sash and case windows, featuring a single lower pane and nine upper panes, with Art Nouveau stained glass on the north elevation and in the stair and vestibule windows. The roof is covered with grey-green slate and has corniced sandstone stacks, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior has not been seen. The property also features gatepiers made of red sandstone ashlar with drum piers topped with pyramidal caps.
