Description
This is an Edwardian villa, dating to circa 1903, designed by Fryers & Penman. It is situated in Glasgow and built in a Scottish revival style, incorporating details from Scots Baronial and 17th century Renaissance architecture. The house is constructed from bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings. Distinctive features include cill courses, a string course, ashlar windows with stop-chamfered arrises, cartouche decoration to the first-floor window aprons on the north elevation, and crowstepped dormerheads that break the eaves.
The north (entrance) elevation has a recessed central bay with a doorway positioned off-centre to the left. The door is panelled and sheltered by a full-width loggia/porch, featuring a tripartite basket-arched arcade with rope-moulded surrounds. A balustraded parapet with a raised central panel, incorporating masque decoration, sits above the arcade. A dormerheaded window is off-centre to the left at the first floor. To the right is a full-height semi-octagonal bay, regularly fenestrated and topped with a balustraded parapet and urn-like finials. To the left is a bay with full-height canted windows of 1-2-1 lights.
The east elevation features a deep canted stair window centrally, with three smaller windows at ground level, followed by three taller, transomed stair lights above. A bipartite window is to the left, and a dormerheaded bipartite window above. A single-storey service wing projects to the outer left.
The south (rear) elevation has a single-storey service wing to the right and irregular fenestration at both ground and first floor levels.
The west elevation is notable for a projecting V-plan window topped with a crenellated parapet, and a dormerheaded bipartite window directly above. A bay with full-height canted windows of 1-2-1 lights is situated to the right.
The windows are timber sash and case, featuring Art Nouveau stained glass panes in the upper sashes. The roof is covered with grey/green slate, featuring coped ashlar stacks with wider ashlar panels at their bases, flanked by 'beak skewputts'. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.
The interior retains its fine, unaltered Edwardian character, with original Art Nouveau fireplaces, fixtures, and fittings. A stained glass panel is incorporated into the half-glazed vestibule door, alongside flanking lights. Plain cornices are present, and wainscotting lines the hall. A double-return timber staircase features balusters and stained glass panels to the stair window.
A rectangular-plan garage is constructed from bull-faced snecked red sandstone with ashlar dressings. It has a gabled north entrance elevation with double doors, and a symmetrical east elevation featuring two bipartite windows and a single window to the outer left. The garage is covered with grey/green slate with ashlar coped skews.
The property is defined by red sandstone ashlar drum gate piers, each topped with pyramidal caps.
