Description
6 Whittinghame Gardens is a two-storey Edwardian villa built around 1903 by Fryers & Penman. It features a Scottish revival style that incorporates elements of Scots Baronial and 17th century Renaissance design. The building is constructed from bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings, showcasing cill courses, a string course, and ashlar mullioned windows with stop-chamfered arisses. The crowstepped dormerheads of the windows break the eaves.
On the north elevation, the villa has a three-bay layout with a two-storey block recessed to the right and a porch in the re-entrant angle. The advanced ashlar porch has a rope-moulded surround and a balustraded parapet with a dated panel at the center. To the right, there is a taller gabled bay featuring full-height canted windows. The left side has an advanced three-bay block with a bipartite window at the ground level and a finialled dormer-headed window above. The right side also includes full-height canted windows arranged in a 1-2-1 light pattern, and a full-height semi-octagonal bay that cants out from the left angle, displaying regular fenestration and cartouche decoration on the first-floor window aprons. The balustraded parapet features urn-like finials on the dies, and there is a small bartizan in the angle to the right.
The east elevation includes an advanced block at the center with a canted crenellated window and a dormer-headed bipartite window above. To the right, there is a V-plan window that projects, along with a tripartite dormer-headed window. A single-storey and attic wing is located to the outer left.
The north elevation features two-pane timber sash and case windows with a honeycomb glazing pattern on the upper sashes. The roof is covered with grey/green slate, and there are corniced red sandstone stacks along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
