Description

5 Whittinghame Gardens is a two-storey Edwardian villa built around 1903 by Fryers & Penman, showcasing a Scottish revival style that incorporates elements of Scots Baronial and 17th century Renaissance design. The villa is constructed from bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring cill courses, a string course, and ashlar mullioned windows with stop-chamfered arrises. The first-floor window aprons on the north elevation are decorated with cartouche designs, and the windows are topped with crowstepped dormerheads that break the eaves.

On the north elevation, there is a recessed central bay with an off-centre left doorway that has modern two-leaf glazed doors. This entrance is sheltered by a full-width loggia or porch, which features a tripartite, basket-arched arcade with a rope-moulded surround to the arches. The entrance bay has an ashlar balustrade on a stone base between the arches of the flanking bays, and a balustraded parapet with a raised panel at the centre displaying a lion rampant. A dormerheaded window is located off-centre on the first floor. To the right, a full-height semi-octagonal bay projects out, featuring regular fenestration and a balustraded parapet adorned with urn-like finials. The bay to the left has full-height canted windows arranged in a 1-2-1 light configuration.

The east elevation includes an enclosed forestair leading to the residence on the first floor. The west elevation features a V-plan window that projects to the centre, topped with a crenellated parapet, and a dormerheaded bipartite window above it. There are also full-height canted windows to the right.

The villa has timber sash and case windows, mostly single-pane on the lower sashes and 9-pane on the upper sashes, with Art Nouveau stained glass panes. The roof is covered with grey/green slate and has corniced sandstone stacks, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

The gatepiers are made of red sandstone ashlar, featuring drum piers with pyramidal caps.
