Description

2 Whittinghame Gardens is a two-storey Edwardian villa built around 1903, designed in the Scottish revival style that features elements of Scots Baronial and 17th century Renaissance architecture. The building is constructed from bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings, showcasing various architectural details such as cill courses, a string course, and ashlar mullioned windows with stop-chamfered arrises. The first-floor window aprons on the north elevation are decorated with cartouche motifs. The villa has crow-stepped dormer heads on the windows that break the eaves, and full-height canted windows on the north elevation are topped with a balustraded parapet adorned with urn-like finials.

On the north (entrance) elevation, there is a recessed bay at the center with an off-center doorway, which is sheltered by a full-width loggia or porch featuring a tripartite basket-arched arcade. The arches have a rope-moulded surround, and the entrance is located in the center bay, flanked by an ashlar balustrade on a stone base between the arches. A dormer-headed window is positioned off-center to the left on the first floor, while full-height canted windows with a 1-2-1 light arrangement are located to the left. A semi-octagonal bay projects from the right angle, displaying regular fenestration.

The east elevation features full-height canted windows at the center, a crenellated parapet, and a dormer-headed bipartite window above. There are also full-height canted windows with a 1-2-1 light arrangement on the far right, alongside a metal fire escape stair that connects to the center and adjoins No. 3.

The villa has timber sash and case windows, mostly with single-pane lower sashes and multi-pane upper sashes, including 12-pane windows on the north elevation that incorporate Art Nouveau stained glass panes. The roof is covered with grey/green slate and has coped red sandstone stacks.

The gatepiers consist of red sandstone ashlar drum piers topped with pyramidal caps.
