Description

1 Whittinghame Gardens is a two-storey Edwardian villa built around 1903 by Fryers and Penman, showcasing a Scottish revival style that incorporates elements of Scots Baronial and 17th century Renaissance design. The villa is constructed from bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring cill courses, a string course, and ashlar mullioned windows with stop-chamfered arrises. Notable architectural details include a crenellated parapet above the projecting windows, crowstepped dormerheads on windows that break the eaves, and masque decoration on the first-floor window aprons on the north elevation. The balustraded parapet, adorned with urn-like finials, complements the full-height canted windows on the north elevation.

On the north (entrance) elevation, the villa presents a three-bay facade with a two-storey block recessed to the right and a porch in the re-entrant angle. The advanced ashlar porch features a rope-moulded surround, a balustraded parapet, and a raised panel at the center displaying the monogram SWD, along with two-leaf panelled doors. A dormerheaded window is located to the left above the porch. To the right of the porch, a taller crowstepped gable includes a full-height canted window. The advanced three-bay block to the left has a bipartite window at ground level and a finialled dormerheaded window above. The right side showcases full-height canted windows arranged in a 1-2-1 light pattern, while a full-height semi-octagonal bay projects from the left angle, featuring regular fenestration and a small bartizan in the angle to the right.

The east elevation includes an advanced two-storey block at the center with a canted window and a dormerheaded bipartite window above. A V-plan window projects to the right, accompanied by a similarly detailed bipartite window above and a wallhead stack to the right. There is also a single-storey and attic, single bay to the outer left, with a window at ground level and a dormerheaded window above. The villa features 2-pane timber sash and case windows and is topped with a grey/green slate roof, complemented by coped red sandstone stacks.
