Description

8 Whittinghame Gardens is a two-storey Edwardian villa built around 1903, designed by Fryers & Penman in a Scottish revival style that incorporates elements of Scots Baronial and 17th century Renaissance architecture. The villa is constructed from bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring a cill course, string course, and ashlar mullioned windows with stop-chamfered arisses. Notable exterior details include a crenellated parapet above the projecting windows, crowstepped dormerheads on windows that break the eaves, and decorative cartouches on the first-floor window aprons on the north elevation.

The north (entrance) elevation has a three-bay layout, with a two-storey block recessed to the right and a porch located in the re-entrant angle. The porch is advanced and features an ashlar construction with a rope-moulded surround and a balustraded parapet that has a raised panel at the center. To the left of the porch, there is a dormerheaded window above it. The taller crowstepped gable of the two-storey block to the right includes full-height canted windows. The advanced three-bay block to the left has a bipartite window at ground level and a finialled dormerheaded window above. The full-height canted windows on the right consist of a 1-2-1 light arrangement, while a full-height semi-octagonal bay projects from the left angle, featuring regular fenestration and a balustraded parapet with urn-like finials. There is a small bartizan in the angle to the right.

The east elevation features an advanced block at the center with a canted window of 1-2-1 lights and a bipartite dormerheaded window above it. There is also a V-plan window projecting to the right, along with another bipartite dormerheaded window above.

The villa has timber sash and case windows, which include single pane lower sections and Art Nouveau stained glass upper panels. The roof is covered with grey/green slate and has corniced sandstone stacks. The interior has not been seen.
